Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles
3.0

Thank God I didn't live in Southern Missouri during the Civil War! This story makes it painfully clear that this war was messy and took its toll on everyone who got in its way.

Each chapter begins with excerpts from actual historical documents that I found fascinating. The author also chose to write dialogue without quotation marks which I found was sometimes confusing, but I think it gave the story almost a dream-like, when-am-I-going-to-wake-from-this-nightmare quality. Even though some chapters moved a little slowly, I found this to be a very enlightening novel, chocked full of historical fact, with characters that felt real, and some of the most effective descriptive language I've read in a while. Worth a read if you like historical fiction with female protagonists.
