This read like a book published in the mid 70s to 80s instead of 2000.  It felt and read like old-school high fantasy.  Of course the main character is a young boy who is flung into a series of tragic circumstances which he ultimately twists to his advantage.  He is good and just and relatively untainted by the cruelty of the world etc.  All this to say that I actually did enjoy this read more than I thought I was going to.  It was blessedly free of the chosen one trope and has an interesting take on power being double edged.  If I come across the rest of the series in second hand shops I would pick them up.
