Happiness Falls by Angie Kim

5.0

The central family in this book was unique and fascinating, and I was captivating from the very beginning. I was left wondering how it would end up until the last page.

“Happiness Falls” brings up gender and racism issues alongside how society views our ability to speak/communicate well as an indicator of intelligence, both in regards to those with disabilities, and those who speak a language different than the society they reside in or have some other speech impediment. I learned so much through the experience of Eugene and will continue to think about how we label many as “nonverbal” even when we are not sure if their inability to communicate is due to a cognitive or motor issue.

I loved the addition of the research and case studies pertaining to happiness and how we experience it as individuals and within communities. It was very well done and really added to the story.

I highly recommend this book!
