Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit

5.0

"If you embody what you aspire to, you have already succeeded. That is to say, if your activism is already democratic, peaceful, creative, then in one small corner of the world these things have triumphed. Activism, in this model, is not only a toolbox to change things but a home in which to take up residence and live according to your beliefs, even if it's a temporary and local place, this paradise of participating, this vale where souls get made."

I loved this book! Solnit reminds us that hopelessness is an attitude that misremembers history, and encourages readers to find joy in participating and remember humanity's potential. Her hope is contagious. If you ever feel yourself getting into a "everything is terrible and nothing I do matters" funk READ THIS! I read a copy from the library but I'm going to buy one ASAP so I can flip through it whenever I start to get bitter or discouraged by ~the way things are~.
