Unlike Maas' other books, this one was painstakingly slow to engage the reader. It took until I was halfway through for the pace to pick up, but the story read brilliant pieces stitched together with the author's manual "weaving". This series reads like Maas is trying to recreate her previous works, forcing her characters into an epic tale and world that doesn't quite suit them.
Then I got to the end and some may find this plot twist brilliant and engaging, I found it disappointing. Readers will need to read the "Court of Thorns and Roses" series to fully understand her next book, which I'm begrudgingly interested in reading now to finish Bryce's tale and maybe have answers about the other characters.
