this was hard to rate because this book is.. inconsistent. when it’s good, it’s REALLY good. and when it’s not, it’s sigh cringe. but overall it was more good than not.

this had a great, strong start: detailed world-building, very morally grey characters and players, good writing, quite dark plot… and then i felt that the tone suddenly shifted in a way that threw me for a loop and i never totally recovered from it. it just went from very dark and mature to.. somewhat less polished and a little high school.

i was cringing pretty bad towards the end, prolonging me finishing the book. it is very reminiscent to how i felt while reading Iron Flame honestly. i didn’t love the banter. it was cute at first but it got really excessive imo. and just.. gah the mistakes the FMC made just really frustrated me. like girl i am rooting SO hard for you but you are being hella dumb!! but the ending was really fun. action-packed, very gripping, twisty, and definitely made me eager for more.

overall it’s an entertaining romantasy. quite well-written, which salvages a lot for me. just be prepared for some cringe.
