Lucky in Love by Kasie West
4.0

EDIT: 6/11/18
Revised rating: 3.5/5 stars

Don't get me wrong; I REALLY enjoyed this. I loved the premise of a newly-eighteen-year-old girl winning the lottery. I loved the romance; it was slow-burning and adorable. (Just like in the other two Kasie West books I've read thus far.) And I liked the general plot.

My problem with this book is the same problem I have with all three Kasie West books that I've read: everything is either oversimplified or completely unrealistic. It bothered me much less in P.S. I Like You, but it really annoyed me in this book, especially in certain aspects. The way the zoo was run didn't make any sense to me in the real world. Maddie's friends each had one or two defining traits, and never developed past them. The fact that Maddie's parents didn't even try to help her figure out how to deal with all this money past the obligatory "You should talk to a financial advisor" statement.

Even the way the characters talk to each other seems forced most of the time. Whether it's the way a sentence is phrased, or the way a conversation veers in unnatural directions.

Wow. Writing this review made me realize that I was even more annoyed by this stuff than I realized. It's just a shame because I love the premises for Kasie West's books, and I want to enjoy them so much. And I completely understand that her books are generally written for a slightly younger YA crowd, but she could definitely do a better job with her dialogue while keeping it profanity-free, and the characters could be better fleshed out.

But I'll probably continue reading her books!
