I used to think books only deserve five stars if they’re perfect. That’s stupid.
This book is not perfect. It might feel a bit too long, one thing was more predictable than it maybe should be.
When it comes to magic systems I tend to just keep reading if I don’t get it because I know I’ll probably get used to it and understand eventually. It was a bit confusing in the beginning. A whole bunch of things were explained through dialogue. But I didn’t mind that. I guess I just like getting to know more and more as I read on, it makes it interesting though I get why others might find it frustrating.
However this remained a theme through the biggest part of the book. The magic but also the characters and the world took a while to really be explained and for me to understand. There was a lot of action and things happening and the stakes always felt high, but it took me long to read because often I found myself taking a break. Just stopping for a while and picking the book up later. It didn’t have the big “I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NOW” energy until the end. It was more a “this is interesting and I like it let me take my time” kind of book.
Yet it still deserves my five stars because I had the best time reading this. I really love the characters and the magic system. So much politics!! Though it was long the writing style was never boring or hard to get through. And I mean THE ENDING! You know things are good when you get all excited and your family members start staring at you for making strange sounds.
Just the people are so great. Their friendship just makes me so happy!! All of them joking around is fun and you just get to see so clearly how much they care about each other, even though they have very different lives.
So Eland and Vin, They were cute. They were nicely falling in love and it was a bit... fast but who cares because that’s not what the story is about. Every time a book doesn’t have some big dramatic romance in it I dance with relief and I now want to bake a big cake to celebrate it. Or maybe I just want to bake a cake in general. I am hungry okay...
So yes. I highly recommend this.
