this is undoubtedly one of those books that just gets better with rereading. this is the third time I’ve read it, and I wanted to properly examine it and fully annotate it. Fitzgerald’s prose is lush and clever without becoming overwrought. His use of figurative language is stellar. He packs all of his story into a concise 180 pages, confining the narrative to a single summer. You can feel the weather in this book, and the cyclical nature of the seasons help it feel both contained and expansive in scope.

There’s a reason this book has stuck around in our collective psyche — it’s damn good. It’s also a very approachable classic — probably why I, like many others, first read this as a freshman in high school nearly 10 years ago now.
