. . . and His Lovely Wife: A Memoir from the Woman Beside the Man by Connie Schultz

5.0

I fell in love with Connie Schultz and her wonderful husband Sherrod Brown. Full disclosure: Had I lived in Ohio Sherrod would have received my vote each time he ran for Senator; he served three terms before being defeated for the current term that began this month. (My beliefs are mostly in synch with hers and his.)

I read Connie's substack, Hopefully Yours (highly recommend if you are interested in beautifully written commentary on life and don't want to be inundated by frequent emails). Thus, when I learned about Connie's books it was an easy decision to put them on hold at the library. I noted Sherrod Brown in my opening paragraph because this book chronicles Connie's (and, by default, Sherrod's) year spent campaigning the first time he ran for the office of Senator from Ohio.

Connie's writing is honest, straight forward, at times funny and at times heart wrenching. It felt as if I was there with her throughout the exhausting yet rewarding, grueling yet uplifting process of helping her husband and his beliefs (which are also her beliefs) become known to every single person in every single county in Ohio. They visited every single of the 88 counties yet coupled with advertisements and interviews it still doesn't reach every single person, but it sure comes close!

Interested in understanding what it's like to run for public office at the state level? Simply enjoy good writing that will reach you in your heart? Or do you like good stories? Connie Schultz provides all of that and more! By the way, saving the accolade for the last item, she is also a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist.
