This is the second time I have read this book. And I fell in love with it all over again. Although the title on Goodreads shows that this is the 9th of the series, this is actually the first written book in the sequence and is therefore a great place to start.

I think that one of the reasons the series appeals is because of the patterns of manners and behavior that each culture expresses. There's that undercurrent of formality and ritualized demeanor that is so familiar to those who have watched Downton Abbey or read about courtly manners in the Elizabethan age.

That being said, this is really an action/adventure novel, set in a science-fiction universe, but with the characterization of more well-rounded fantasy.
