The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston

2.0

First, I didn't read the book, I listened to the unabridged audio book on my walks and commute. I am so glad I listened to the book, I would not have finished it otherwise. I wish i could give ½ stars but not possible, so 2 stars it is. The book had a pretty good start, a long long drawn out middle and only in the last few pages was there finally some movement.

This is a standalone book and does not tie in the Witch's daughter in any way. I dont even know where to begin:
-Morgana no longer speaks after her beloved father disappears. Throughout the book, I was trying to figure our and hoping I would learn what happened to her father. Was the loss of her voice trauma from her fathers leaving or was it some kind of witchy thing. Regardless, of her not speaking, she does not even make sounds, which the human body can do. At the end of the book, suddenly she can speak again....again no reason as to why.

- Her mother enrolled her in school but had to take her out when the school requested it. Morgana can read but struggles with writing. Her mother should have taught her at home and should have taught her more skills. As it is Morgana was apparently allowed to roam free and do as she pleases. Maybe, her mother has also not gotten over the fact that her husband/father of her daughter, disappears.

- Morgana was married to Cai but initially behaves like a self-absorbed and self righteous brat. This only slightly changes throughout the story and you can tell Morgana's inexperience. The lack of skills and social graces shows throughout, as does her age. At end, I can only categorize Morgana as a highly inexperienced self-absorbed girl.

I was hoping for a better story after "The Witch's daughter" but was disappointed and the narrator made it tolerable to finish it to the end. Not nearly as much witchy stuff in the book as in the Witch's daughter, which was disappointing.
