The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

dark emotional tense slow-paced

3.75

I have to give respect to one of the foremothers of my favorite genre, magical realism. Isabel Allende’s choices in crafting the world were beautiful. The way the story fits together is perfect. However, the story was often disturbing and distressing and I’m truly glad it’s over now- near every man commits or fantasizes about sexual assault over this 70ish year story. I understand characters can be complicated, but it’s hard to root for someone who supports someone so truly truly evil. What an experience this was.
