ash6673 's review for:
O Sinners!
by Nicole Cuffy
took too long of a break halfway through reading this to leave a well thought out review. but i will say it really dragged in the middle. to the point where i almost DNF-ed it. i was pleasantly surprised by the author’s apparent research into new religious movements (or cults). it was nuanced and carefully explored. there was definitely research (or experience) with islam as well, but it leaned into overdone stereotypes, in my opinion. i liked faruq as a character, but everything about him seemed underdeveloped. i felt like i had no more affection towards or understanding of him at the end than at the beginning. the flashbacks to vietnam were enjoyable, but i think the book itself suffered for it. overall, the ending was underwhelming and i got none of the satisfaction i was hoping for. also, i can’t say the writing was bad, but it was not for me.
