He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan
4.5
adventurous challenging dark inspiring tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The themes of the first book are catapulted to a whole new level in this sequel. The concept of being the other in a society and finding ways to survive and meet your own ambitions, coupled with what feels like a critique into the lengths people will go to get what they want, lends to a very enjoyable read. How can you reject the structures around you and still succeed? And at what point is chasing a dream no longer worth the costs?

The story does have a bit of a rough start, almost as of Parker-Chan knew exactly where the story wanted to go but wrote the part where it all kicks off last. The payoff is great, though, and what comes next is some fantastic storytelling and character work.

It's much faster-paced that the first entry, as the initial groundwork has been laid. We don't take time for characters to grow and weave their way towards being the people they've become. That's already happened, and now we have the fallout.
