The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Strong character development? Yes
- Loveable characters? Yes
4.5
While the story has a slower pace and sometimes feels like not much is happening, there was something so compelling about going on this journey with the main character. The writing just flowed carrying you with the witches as they walked the ley. There is a plot and a “big bad”, but the story is really about accepting yourself and creating community. There are also strong themes of the different kinds of power, when and how they can be used best/ethically, and consequences of abusing power.
Sapling Cage is the start of a trilogy but still felt like a complete story with an ending that wraps up enough things to be satisfying while still leaving enough open for subsequent books.
