The Reluctant Vampire by Lynsay Sands
2.0

2.5
This could have easily been a 3.5 if not for the wildly unnecessary use of the n-word. I am against white writers using the word- there are PLENTY of other ways to portray racist characters and I am VERY against the n-word in a ROMANCE. If the n-word pops up again in another book, I’m done with the series. My hackles have been raised.

Besides the baffling (absurd! ridiculous! offensive!) use of the n-word, the story was very similar to the last two books: a series of unfortunate events happening. Yawn. It started off exciting enough - delicious sexual tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. There was excellent backstory for our MC and the description of characters even moved past the generic ‘they were hot in a hot way but not in a conventionally hot way’ schpiel.

But the story was soon mired in tedious details like where a bowl of popcorn was located on a blanket, or how someone hung their coat up after shrugging it off, or where a character would put their drink down. It’s giving stream of consciousness and it’s annoying when there’s suddenly so much detail for no reason but you get very minimal detail for more inportant things like character descriptions and setting.

But who am I kidding? The use of the n-word RUINED the likeability of this book for me.
