The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
by Mark Twain
I first read portions of this in middle school. They have always stuck with me, so it has been on my radar for awhile to read the entire story. During some snooping around the Banned Books website during Banned Books week, I came across Huckleberry Finn. That is what I wanted to read, but I am a stickler for reading things in order...so I had to read Tom Sawyer first. Which was fine since, like I said, it has been on my radar for quite awhile.
After reading this book, I am left with this thought...Mark Twain can write. I didn't appreciate this in middle school. I really enjoyed the parts of the story we read (I particularly remember the painting of the fence), but as an adult the writing really struck me. There are some beautiful passages in here. The story itself was fine as well, and I got a glimpse into what it must be like growing up as a boy. Tom is quite the troublemaker.
Many people say that Huck Finn is the better book, so I'm excited to see what's in store there....whenever I get around to it. "So many books...so little time."
