Lord of Light
by Roger Zelazny
What a novel! This blending of science and fantasy leads you to a science fiction novel with elements of Kipling. The "gods" live for so long as mythical powers that they come to believe it themselves.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” - Mr Clarke rather than Mr Zelazny, but highly pertinent to this superb bit of writing.
