The front cover review states that it is "a gripping Gothic tale".  It's Gothic for sure, but it didn't really grip me until the last third of the book maybe?
None of the characters are particularly lovable, except maybe Maisie?
The 'science' was interesting? Very Victorian, and completely unrealistic, but a good framework within which to explore feminism in Victorian England.
The romances were clumsy and dealt with awkwardly, which was a little frustrating, although it is also consistent with the structure of the book, as a journal where the protagonist is trying to process events.
As a first book, it has merit, and I'm interested to see if she writes anything else, as this is an interesting time period, and I'm always up for a bit of queerness.
