My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 by Emil Ferris

5.0

CW: rape, sex slavery

This was not at all what I expected...at all. I was expecting a cute story told by a school girl about what it's like to want to be a monster, who attempts to solve the mystery of her neighbor's death.

What I got was at times a heart-wrenching story about what it's like to be mixed race (I can relate), queer (I can relate), and an outsider (I can relate). Mixed in with a story of what it was like for her neighbor in life - with rape, sex slavery, and the Holocaust.

It was hard for me to read parts, but it was impossible to put down. The illustrations were incredible - all line-drawings, seemingly done with pen in crosshatching - and so elaborate in what they depicted. I would highly recommend this graphic novel, but be aware that parts are hard to read.
