The Reappearance of Rachel Price
by Holly Jackson
i know when most readers hear Holly Jackson, they'll immediately think of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder because of how popular (and good) it is. upon receiving this ARC, i have to say... i was EXCITED. that's probably even an understatement. i had high hopes for this and let me tell you, i was not disappointed. while most will hold a lot of comparison of this to AGGGtM, i hope it does not get overshadowed by AGGGtM's success and that this book be appreciated on its own.
this book had me on edge, trying to piece the puzzle together every step of the way and the whole whodunit experience. you knew something isn't sitting right or adding up from the moment Rachel Price appears in the story. when you think you've got something figured out, you're later left wondering & doubting the who/what/where/when/why's.
my heart broke for Bel, as she navigated the things that have happened and continue to happen to her and her family. she went from an innocent little girl too young to understand her witnessing of her mom's disappearance, to an 18yo who has learned to isolate herself for fear of losing someone, anyone again... especially after having to grow up in the aftermath of the mystery in her mom's disappearance. so she's stuck in this cocoon of the only people she's ever allowed to be close... her family. but just like anyone, can you ever really trust family? or... is Bel just paranoid that her familial dynamics has changed now that her mom's back? is everyone telling the truth? or are there lies waiting to be unraveled?
once i got halfway through the book, i didn't want to put it down. i couldn't. i needed to know the truth, whatever it could be. everyone looked guilty of something, whether it be withholding information or partaking in the abduction of Rachel Price.
the last 10 chapters really had me eyes wide, jaws dropped, occasionally screeching, hands reaching for something to keep me steady, and heart beating so fast. all the land mines exploding here, there, everywhere. and it was done SO well.
also, sidenote... the little banters between Bel & Ash were cute. it was like a drop of a little romance. so small, but Jackson stayed true to Bel's character and didn't try to force a romantic plot. just a little tiny smidge of something. like Ash's friendship was a symbol of hope for Bel.
this definitely gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 for me. hands down will most likely be one of my favorite reads this year! something i'll definitely purchase to reread in the future and/or gift to fellow true crime/mystery/thriller friends upon release. definitely recommend!
a big thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for allowing me the opportunity to read this as an ARC. i leave this honest review voluntarily.
