The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
2.5
adventurous slow-paced
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

this book contains every trope, plotline, etc. that i usually adore in fantasy books. the comparisons to Six of Crows, while not entirely wrong (and i'm not complaining about that), were also greatly exaggerated and this book felt very original to me.

all that being said, i'm not quite sure why i found it as boring as i did. i could usually inhale a book of this length within a day, but this one took me the better half of a week, and barely anything even seemed to happen.

we'll start with one of the best characters— zofia. she was one of the highlights of the book and, as an autistic person myself, i found the representation fairly accurate and inoffensive. she was relatable and charming, and i liked that she was given somewhat of a love interest.
even if that romance never goes anywhere and the LI in question, enrique, is a bisexual interested in both a man and a woman at the same time—what!

severin was also fairly likeable and i appreciated the creativity of how his backstory was revealed, though for all the novel's claims that he was a mastermind he never really seemed to show it and was constantly making the worst decisions possible. his relationship with laila wasn't terrible, though their reasons they couldn't be together were poor and just felt like shoehorning in conflict for the sake of more conflict. laila herself was an interesting character, though, and i liked her little quirks with the sugar in her hair and her gentle friendship with zofia.

enrique and hypnos were also exciting characters, so really the only issue was tristan. i didn't care for him at all so that whole plotline was uninteresting and the twist had very little effect on me. the villain too was predictable and one dimensional.

all in all, not an awful debut with some really great qualities with regards to diversity, representation and creativity, but i won't be picking up future books in the series and as i was reading i was mostly just willing it to be over sooner.
