Believing the Lie
by Elizabeth George
George taps back into the darker elements that drew me to this series 16 (holy hell) books ago in A Great Deliverance. Some of the Lynley and Havers stories don't carry the grittiness found in the first book, and while I doubt George will ever match that masterpiece, Believing the Lie is one of the better entries. A dark, creative, enjoyable web of a read.
She likes to write. This novel might possess the breakneck speed of a whipping thriller but characters' thoughts and motivations are thoroughly explored. The story delves into the the inner workings of the community and minds of those in it.
I would recommend this to fans of the series or crime fiction fans in general who don't mind a well plotted 700 page novel instead of a crisper, less fleshed out 300 pager. In the hands of a less skilled author the length might be a negative but not here. A very solid read that holds your interest (and makes you think) the entire ride.
