Only Mostly Devastated
by Sophie Gonzales
I LOVED this book.
At 2am I decided to go to bed with a book, read a few chapters...roll on 8am, with me in a pool of my own tears (that had leaked, dried up, leaked, dried up consistently through the whole book)
This book is cute, lovely, wonderful but also sad, thought provoking and upsetting. Emotional rollercoaster is definitely a phrase that would work to describe Only Mostly Devastated.
I loved Ollie as a character, he was flawed, awkward and a bit over analysing (definitely can relate there) but also had such a lovely heart. A big part of this book that I didn't know about going in (who am I kidding? I knew NOTHING other than 'Grease retelling' going in!) was the whole family aspect. Ollie is the new kid in town because his parents decided to move closer to his very sick Aunt to help out. Ollie is designated babysitter for her two small children, which was always a pleasure to read about.
I thought the romance on / off, will they / won't they was engaging and believable. There were obviously ups and downs, but I'm glad the downs weren't soooo horrifically bad that you'd scream at a character for forgiving the other. When they were together you'd feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and when they were apart you'd feel the same pining they felt for each other.
I liked the dynamic of the girl gang. All three girls had different personalities, their friendship had in arguments and bickering, but was always solid and each of them always had the others back. I can see some people not liking Lara, definitely took me a while to warm up to her, but I thought it was great to show how polarizing different personalities can come together and flourish.
All in all a beautifully, wonderful book. It was so sad at times, and I really appreciated that juxtaposition between extreme sadness and uplifting joy.
