The Hidden World of the Fox by Adele Brand

adventurous hopeful informative reflective fast-paced

4.0

“At its heart, science is curiosity. Merely noting the presence or absence of a fox on your front lawn is in essence a scientific action.”

“When people claim that foxes are everywhere, they are both correct and imprecise.”

“Unbridled fear alienates us from nature, and motivates severe mistreatment of animals without increasing anyone’s safety. I have seen this cycle. It is not pleasant.”

Written by a professional ecologist and fox expert this book is full of interesting fox information and practical ideas on fox conservation and coexistence.

If you want a comprehensive text book of foxes this isn’t that, it is a reflection on humans relationship with foxes, from London foxes to those in Polish forests and with the inclusion of a good amount of fox related folklore from a variety of cultures.

The writer is clearly a expert in all things fox and has a infectious enthusiasm for her subject.

I really enjoyed this. I have always had a soft spot for foxes and I learnt a lot about their global ecology and folklore from this book.

I also found it easy to read and enjoyable. The language wasn’t over complicated (which can be the case for some science books) and I really liked her practical real world view on human fox interactions.

Her specific knowledge, practical attitude and unbridled enthusiasm made this little book a pleasure to read.

I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in foxes and would like to learn a little more about them. It is by no means a comprehensive account on all fox life but it dose so a great job of contextualising them in relation to humans and is an enjoyable read.
