The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer

5.0

"As long as I am alive, someone loves you"

Another queer scifi book that completely destroyed me. I did not expect this book to be THIS good but wow. I want you all to go in as blind as I did, because this is a story that you need to fully experience for yourself.

This is mostly presented as a romance, and in many ways it is. It is a beautiful story about two strangers learning to trust each other under the most hopeless of circumstances. The story is told through Ambrose pov and it is easy to fall in love with him, and his desire to protect his sister. But Kodiaks hard exterior, soft heart, & tragic stories are the emotional hook throughout this book.

Beyond the romance, this is a space exploration story that mixes the genres of thriller, action, and horror together. Eliot tells a story of destiny, familial pressures, acceptance, and even makes commentary on how greater powers (military) always fail those that dedicate everything to them.

You all need to read this book, because WOW.
