The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

adventurous mysterious reflective fast-paced

3.5

This is a pretty good book! I enjoyed the quick pacing, mysteries I couldn’t figure out, and creative puzzles that I could visualize nicely.
I only have two main complaints.
1) I don’t mind plot-centered books, but in this case-especially given how fast it was-it detracts from the individual development of the characters. I didn’t feel like they changed at all, only learning more about their past. Which is fine, I just didn’t find myself loving them all that much. (Except for Xander 🤍)
2) the romance/love triangle subplot was  unnecessary and uninteresting. I’m referring to the one with Avery, not Emily. Though, the subplot about Emily became a little excessive at times, and I felt like something was lacking. (Probably that character development tbh. To Barnes’s credit, it’s hard to develop a dead character) I think the subplot did serve the emotional aspects of the theme of guilt, competition, mistrust, etc. etc.
Despite these small gripes I would definitely recommend this book and I plan to finish the series!
