Book deserves more than it's average rating here in Goodreads (3.8 at time of this review) . Rough start, but the middle was solid after having gained momentum and the ending was chef's kiss. I guess it's tricky writing a book that tackles about race? Idk. I'd like to think they didn't really delve into race too much and the story - the meat - Norris's journey was well written and remarkable. It follows a typical high school odyssey and subverts expectations, while also presenting ideas and messages about immigrants and BLM while not being preachy.

*4.5 stars. It's up there with "Holes" (Louis Sachar) and "OK for now" (Gary D. Schmidt), and these are some of my favorites. One blurb said it's good for fans of John Green but I feel like I'm too old to enjoy Green's novels
