Unfuck Your Brain: Using Science to Get Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-Outs, and Triggers by Faith G. Harper

4.0

I have done a lot of therapy for anxiey over the years and typically get annoyed when a therapist explains the neuroscience of it to me as if that knowledge is supposed to make me feel better...but I was pleasantly surprised by the information in this book. Though I rolled my eyes constantly at the trying-way-too-hard-to-be-fun way it's written, I learned a lot and have gained some new strategies to deal with anxiety. (I wish there was a to-the-point version of this book without the bad jokes!) Understanding the way the brain builds habits around emotions has given me an unexpected feeling of optimism for addressing specific causes of anxiety. I must say the subtitle is misleading, as the book is really just about trauma and anxiety: 2/3 of the book is focused on these topics while anger, addiction, and depression are squished into the last 50 pages and discussed only in the context of being caused by trauma.
