Dark Life by Kat Falls

3.0

Ages 9+ (an attempted lynching)

If Thirteenth Child was Wild West meets HP, this book is Wild West meets Waterworld. And other than the fact that I totally missed that the main character, Ty, was a boy until 65 pages in it was an absorbing, if not great, book.

Fifteen year old Ty was the first child born undersea. He and his fellow settlers have technological advantages (not fully explained) such as Liquigen, which allows them to (breathe? subsist?) in the deep sea without getting the bends. There are also the mythical "dark gifts," an unproven (?) assertion that kids born underwater now have SPECIAL FISHY POWERS from the water pressure exerting on their brains all the time. (Yes, seriously. Yet I still liked this book?) Anyway, Ty meets a Topsider girl, Gemma, who is looking for her brother, a prospector. He decides to help her. There's also a threatening gang of outlaws lurking about. They may have killed Gemma's brother, if you believe the bloody submarine. Predictable twists ensue. If you can suspend your disbelief and not look for too many answers, this is good fun for kids who enjoyed The City of Ember and the like.
