This book is an interesting historical artifact, but I can’t really believe high schools are still forcing kids to try to identify with a rich white lady who’s dying to cheat on her husband while in the same breath referring to a child as “the quadroon.” Gross. I don’t usually recommend men over women but I’ll take Anna Karenina literally any day over Edna Pontellier.
