I loved this book and have found myself thinking about it and recommending it many times since finishing. The characters are diverse and flawed and unique and undergo immense growth and change throughout, especially the main character, Robin. The prose and writing style is incredible, and the passion and attention the author put into every detail comes across so powerfully (I particularly liked the footnotes, which I found very unique and interesting). The magic system is probably the most unique and interesting I’ve ever read and I loved how magic felt so natural in an otherwise historical setting. The themes of colonialism and racism are explored so powerfully and masterfully throughout the backdrop of magical realism, and the way the characters grapple with these topics feels so genuine. This book is funny and sad and magical and reflective and informative and immersive all at the same time. It is not a light book (by size or topic) by any means, but it is so worth it.
