The male protagonist in this novel is a sexual predator. Yet, Marquez describes him as "the man with the soul of a poet and the patience of a saint." Marquez has zero interest in interrogating the murders, suicides, and humiliations wrought by the protagonist and is simply content to bombard the reader with endless descriptions with the most tedious details. Perhaps the editor was too afraid to do their job, given Marquez's Nobel Prize- winning prior work? 2 stars - the best part of the book was learning about the history of Colombia.
