If you've seen the Disney-Pixar movie this started as fanfiction of you've read at least 60% of the story.
I personally don't mind books starting as fanfiction, I think it's a great way to create a story which you then twist and change the world and characters of to make your own, but this was not changed at all except that they're 20, the addition of mer-racism and 2 original characters who added the 'darker/grittier' side of the story which I personally didn't care for or like their relationship.
So overall, cute moments, but nothing necessarily new, and the 'newer' bits added were not my thing.
