Red Rose Academy Year One
by M. Guida
This vampire paranormal academy fiction is different, with a new take on many standard experiences. However, the story engages with a heroine, bullying, and a new twist on vampires. Rose is endearing, and I enjoy watching her blossom into a heroine, even with the trigger warning actions against her. The love triangle is well-defined but not the focus of the story. Their academy setting and the politics are intriguing. Overall, I enjoyed it enough to read more. This is mainly Rose's POV and this author's subtle connections to other series and characters.
Rose has some good friends and is involved in the paranormal world, but I can't tell if she is a vampire, a witch, or something else. However, her introduction to the academy is engaging. She has a friendship with Prince Rocco and Valentin, who are both vampires. However, she wants to avoid assimilating to the current status quo for women in vampire society. Rose desires to be an equal in all ways.
Rocco has some ideas about her, but Valentin does as well, but he has a societal disadvantage. I do see the love triangle trope already, as do the friends. Ah, so Rose is unique; however, there needs to be a trigger warning for her interaction with her father. She totally has damaged MC vibes.
This story is quite sad, with many of Rose's interactions making her a victim of abuse and bullying. Obviously, we are getting her side of the story. The author does bridge a connection between Rose and Ebony in this story.
It seems a constant throughout this story is Rose's struggle with the love triangle, her father, and the academy. The book ends with a new foe added to the storyline for her and a slight cliffhanger ending. Rocco and Valentin are hit and miss in this story, as it is mostly from Rose's perspective. I like her magical powers and her differences, but this story is a totally different take on vampire paranormal stories.
