Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead

5.0

This book took me totally by surprise! I am used to Whitehead's books being a little obtuse and a little heavy, and I haven't loved them all.

However, this was just excellent. It felt both substantial and lighthearted, and was just a really lovely and quick read that I enjoyed a lot. This isn't to say that it didn't touch on issues of race and class, or that parts of it were not sad, just that it was an easy and pleasant reading experience!

I also loved the structure - I get overwhelmed by tension and often flip ahead to find out enough about the end to ease that tension, but this book was structured episodically (please tell me this gets optioned as a TV show), which meant that I couldn't do that, but also that I didn't mind because the current caper was resolved quickly and not too drawn out.
