The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

4.0

such a fever dream of a book. it took me a while to get into (i think a bit before the halfway mark) since i was really looking forward to the real horror elements and in the beginning they were few and far between. there's so much going on in this book, dealing with themes of isolation, sexuality, mental illness, it was all so fascinating even if it was confusing at times. the writing style was really beautiful, although sometimes it felt like it was a bit much and i was somewhat disoriented. i also related to eleanor possibly a bit too much. you can totally see shirley jackon's influence, and i now understand why she's such a titan of the genre. i'm glad i finally got around to reading this :)
