This Dark Wolf by Everly Frost

I could not appreciate the romance, and how the entire weight of the book is pulled by the romance, it results in me seeing this book as an “ugh”.

I will let just one example speak for itself and if that is not enough to be believable, then by all means go read the book and make your own opinion about it.

The passage I want to talk about is somewhat towards the middle/the end of the book, so I do not know to what extent it is spoiler-ish, but just to be sure I will mark that part. This was your warning. What goes under this paragraph is a potential SPOILER:

SpoilerOk, so the following scene has this context: The protagonist was meeting Tristan`s (the love interest) pack for the first time, with all the members. At some point, Tristan goes to one of the she-wolfs. His gesture is immediately read as him choosing her. The protagonist feels like something sheared her heart in half and storms out of the room ---I, as a reader was so confused and getting whiplashes from the sudden commotion—but Tristan follows her back to her room. He kneels beside her and the following convo is taking place:

“Tristan drops to the carpet in front of me. One of his hands grips my shoulder, the other my waist, pulling me upright, forcing me to look up. “You say you don’t understand pack law—and maybe you don’t—but your wolf does,” he says. “I rejected you, and now she’s tearing herself apart because she fought for dominance—she won it—but she was cast aside anyway. She knows what has to happen next.”
“And what…” I gasp, tears falling down my cheeks. “Is that?”
“We either fight or I mark you as my mate.”
Everything freezes.
I reel as his emotionless statement hits me, but he grips me tightly, relentless in his determination to keep hold of me.
“When you dominated the strongest women in my pack, you asserted yourself as the alpha female,” he says.”

The level of cringe that I felt… I was rolling my eyes so hard by that point that I thought I would make some holes in my skull. These two are going even beyond a “rejected mate” to straight up “a mating bound so powerful that you have to die for it”. Well, all mate bond are to-die-for them, so maybe I am not making the point I thought I was.

Yeah, as a conclusion, I did not enjoy that much this experience. I won`t read the second book, unfortunately. Life is too short.
