Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
by Yuval Noah Harari
I heard an interview with the author of this book more than a year ago and found him interesting - I stuck this on my to-read list and when I (finally) started using Libby (free e-books from library) this year I put it on hold. I enjoyed it, in that it provides a fresh, somewhat iconoclastic take on human history, the meaning of empire, the point of religions and ideologies. The tone was a bit arrogant and although the author has a history PhD it was written to be readable and provocative rather than scholarly. Still, for me it was one of those books that has given me some new perspectives to consider on the human project and probably forever slightly changed my own perspective, as well. 4 stars
