May We Be Forgiven
by A.M. Homes
What on earth ... happened here? The opening 35 or 40 pages are incredible, horrifying, compelling as hell. Afterward? Implausibilities pile up higher and higher, by turns funny and puzzling, bordering on grotesque. Homes's flat style undercuts the depth she seems to be insisting that her characters contain, but not to any larger end; the prose just fails. The book, it pains me to say, fails.
