Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick

5.0

I enjoyed this book. I listened to the audio version and I highly recommend that because it's about a road trip to discover more about Washington's legacy, and it feels like I was on the trip too. I like how this didn't idolize Washington, but humanized him. He was certainly a flawed man helping to build a flawed country, and it was interesting to travel with the author and think about Washington's legacy in a new frame of mind. I would definitely read more books in this format, and have already reserved more novels by Philbrick on my library app. As a history teacher, I feel he did this content justice.

I see some other reviewers call his conversations about slavery heavy handed, but I am appreciative that Philbrick did not shy away from that important discussion. Washington was a slaveholder. that is part of his legacy, and we can't ignore the bad to focus solely on the good without denying justice to those who suffered under him

Highly recommend!
