This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno

4.0

This book took a lot out of me. I came into expecting a fun horror romp with and evil Google home, and left with a complex exploration of grief. This story is dark, with both hard to stomach and hard to understand sections. If there's one thing I took away from it, it's that grief can be subtle or so, so loud. Explosive or creeping, but always unrelenting. Watching the main character try to figure out what to do with their life after their wife's death quickly becomes a story of being haunted by a past that he can't leave behind. This is mostly a story of grieving, but wrapped in a horror casing. Like many others have already pointed out, the ending gets a lot more difficult to follow but the book overall is impactful and dread inducing.

Huge, huge, huge trigger warning for animal death and mutilation. I love horror, but there were sections of this book that made me nauseous and uncomfortable with the depictions of an animal's death.
