Hell in a Handbasket by Mila Young, Harper A. Brooks

4.0

Hell in a Handbasket is the second installment in Mila Young and Harper A. Brooks’ Sin Demons series. Book two picks up where book one left off and continues forward with a well-paced beginning that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you read to find out what happens next. But things do slow down as Aria and the guys face a bit of a set back and then discover that they have other problems looming. Another threat is making itself known as Aria’s abilities and presence is no longer a “secret” and the three demons’ quest for the harp begins to come to the forefront. Add in their growing attraction to Aria and you have a good amount of drama ready to implode.
Hell in a Handbasket begins with a dragon and a scream. I was hooked from the start and eager to see where the authors were going to take the whole situation with Aria. It seems that Aria has been thrown out of the frying pan into the fire. Sir Surchion has kidnapped her and flown her out into the mountains and I could only guess what he had in mind to do with her. There is quite a bit going on with this book. The demons are frustrated with Aria’s disappearance and are on edge about what to do. They find themselves in a bit of a situation that only gets more complicated. There is the introduction of a strange new character that I’m curious to learn more about.
I have to say that adore the addition of a precious little furry critter that the authors write into this book. Because obviously we needed something cute and adorable to balance out the huge irritable ball of hellhound that thunder clouds around the mansion. LOL!
For those who enjoy the steamier elements of this reverse harem romance…there is so much steamy!! I love it! It’s well done without being overdone. There is build up in the right places, and there is even a couple of heart pumping chase scenes to grow the anticipation and excitement.
My only real issue with this book is…Aria. The authors are working to write her as spunky, sassy, spirited and smart, but she honestly comes off as dumb at times. She keeps thinking that if she can just “run and get away from the demons that she’ll be home free.” Is she really that dense? They own her soul. It’s been contracted to them, by someone else who wanted to save their own neck (not that that worked out well for them). Does she conveniently forget this or is she just THAT “naïve”? I get tired of her sticking to this “I think I’ll run” train of thought. Then…why doesn’t she say anything to the guys about the stranger in the backyard?
I am choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The pace starts out good in the beginning, but then it really slows down in comparison to the first book. I had hoped that Aria would have developed a bit of sense, but that hasn’t happened quite yet. I do like that things are developing beyond lust between the characters and are heading gradually into the romance department. Get ready for a cliffhanger with this book, not as intense as the first, but one still nonetheless. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.
