The Girl in The Tower:
by Katherine Arden, Katherine Arden
POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2022: A different book by an author you read in 2021
This was a really lush sequel to The Bear and the Nightingale. As per the previous one, I mostly listened on audiobook and read a little bit on Kindle. Yet again, Kathleen Gati's narration was out of this world and added hugely to my enjoyment of the story.
I hadn't given much thought to what Vasya's forays into the world would look like after the events of the first book, but it turned out to be exactly what you would expect: Lots of bravery, quite a bit of cleverness but still not quite enough for a young girl, alone, in a man's world.
There was some neat interlinking to the first book that helped build the plot and the mystery / suspicion around why Vasya left home. As per usual, I didn't see one of the bigger twists coming (oblivious reader, I am her) so the build up to the finale was really exciting for me. The resolution was very satisfying but managed to avoid being overly twee.
I am perhaps even more excited for book 3 now than I was for this one, so it's great that I already have both the audio and the Kindle versions ready to go. I might wait a little longer this time, as I don't want to rush to the very end too soon.
