Hunted by Kristin Cast, P.C. Cast

2.0

The fifth installment in the House of Night series, Hunted, continues the saga of Zoey Redbird and her coven. While the core story holds some intrigue,  several factors significantly hamper the reading experience.

Repetition is a major culprit.  Readers are constantly bombarded with rehashed information about characters' sexual orientations, appearances, and backstories. This not only feels patronizing but also disrupts the narrative flow.

Excessive recapping further bogs down the plot.  Instead of propelling the story forward, a significant portion of the book regurgitates details from previous entries.  This approach assumes readers lack the ability to retain information, which is frustrating for fans invested in the series.

The plot itself feels stagnant.  Zoey and her companions spend a large chunk of the book hiding and making minimal progress.  Forced plot devices like Zoey's impulsive actions and convenient prophecies further diminish the narrative tension.

The portrayal of the goddess Nyx is particularly perplexing.  While she actively intervenes at times, Nyx inexplicably remains silent during a critical school takeover.  This inconsistency makes her motivations unclear and weakens the narrative logic.

Overall, Hunted is a disappointing entry in the House of Night series. The repetitive writing, excessive recapping, and sluggish plot make it a slog to get through.  Devoted fans might find some redeeming qualities, but newcomers are likely to be turned off by the book's shortcomings.
