The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
4.25

Goes a little easy on imperial Japan, but on the other hand, i really appreciated Mr. Tagomi's characterization. I'm not a huge fan of alternate history in a lot of cases, but this is really an alternate present anyway. There's a bit of spinning out other ways history could have unfolded, and definitely some lurid details of this particularly dark timeline, but it's ultimately in service of the book's real interests. There's an interesting meta commentary on the genre and just like The Grasshopper Lies Heavy novel within in the novel, it's purpose is to say something about our world, not the imagined one in the book
