A Night in the Lonesome October
by Roger Zelazny
This is a perfect book to read during October. I've read it more times than I can remember. It's not Zelazny's best book, but it is the best of his late-career work.
The story is told from the point of view of Snuff the watchdog. Snuff is the familiar of Jack the Ripper. Many characters in the book are historical or literary figures from the late 19th and early 20th century. This odd collection of people have gathered in the Victorian English countryside to participate and compete in a dangerous arcane ritual that is repeated whenever there is a full moon on October 31st. Snuff spies on the other participants and interacts with their animal companions. The book progresses a chapter a day to the big event. A big part of the fun of this book is trying to figure out what is going on so I'm not going to say anything more.
If you like Victorian horror fiction and old monster movies, this is worth a look.
