Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin
2.0

DNF at 25%. I was stoked to read Hana Khan Carries on: it features a second generation family--first-person perspective on growing up Muslim in a majority Christian/nonbeliever country (Canada)--AND it's a spin on a film we have all seen at some point in our lives, You've Got Mail. And despite how anyone may feel about the film itself... god knows we all remember it! All the ingredients were there for a delicious little read for me. But, sadly, the blend didn't take.

While I loved the premise of this book, it fell a bit flat for me in a few ways. The characters, despite being in their mid-20s, all felt a bit young. The 'competition' aspect also felt a bit forced... after all, what community gets mad when another business opens up? That's literally what restaurants do? I didn't really care for the rude introduction and follow ups with our main interest, and felt like I was being bludgeoned in the head with the twist that I never even got to. Eventually, when Hana kicks up a big stink in a public area with Main Fella, I decided it was time to throw in the towel.

Le sigh. It just wasn't my cup of tea. But I love the idea of it--since so many readers seemed to love Usma's other work more, I may just have to give that a whirl.
