Hungry Ghosts

This book was beautifully written, the prose creating such a strong sense of place and immersion in the setting that I had to take breaks during the more challenging parts of the story. The characters were well developed and deeply complex. If I have one criticism of this book it’s that the storylines didn’t quite come together as well as I expected. And, perhaps this is just the timing of when I chose to read this, but, for me, the amount of violence towards both people and animals was difficult to push through — I felt somewhat eager for the book to end. Nevertheless, a powerful and compelling exploration of the ways generational trauma, religion, colonialism, and racism shaped the lives of these families during this time period.
